Clreations
As I type this it is the morning that I finished the tour of Shop and Hop -- all 480 stores. I do have some favorites to show you and they will be coming along this month and beyond as the event continues.
My impressions?
It is pretty obvious that Shop and Hop is no longer the place to be. Noting green dots (or lack of green dots) is a pretty conclusive sign. I figured that out last winter and opted out this round after many successful events in the past. So a thank you to Linden Lab for instigating the events.
There seemed to be even more fantasy this round and plenty of new folks. Honestly I think that is a fine thing -- giving the newcomers and people learning the ropes a chance to be in a big event. I know it is exciting for them. There were some impressive displays again this round and not so many blank walls up front with four items and a gift on the wall. This is good.
A couple of things definitely bothered me though.
There is no reason that each and every gatherer of gifts should find all of them useful. There are too many roads to walk in Second Life. But there has always been a tenancy for some creators to "fudge" a lot on the gift. One single pose, one single TEXURE and items that they don't sell as part of their brand are not what a gift should be --- especially when this 480 creator get together is free.
Those things (to me) seem like a slap in the face -- both as a potential or actual customer and as a creator (or at least ex creator :D). And that's the story here.
I found this adorable little kitty. So cute. I knew from the past though that the creator (I am not telling who) does NOT make this kind of object. Sure enough upon inspection it was a full perm item on the marketplace. Not only that it is priced so low it is a "gift" from there. So the person giving this away (long chat with the creator tells me that this was actually OK in this case while not in some of the others on the Marketplace) ---- was it APPROPRIATE? Not in my world.
Now let's look at the very pretty garden creation in the background. This is also all full-perm items -- but at least the person giving it away put it all together and possibly textured some parts; there "is" some creation at work there -- time spent, attention focused. We can't all make mesh from scratch. It is a long and daunting learning curve and lots of folks give up. We CAN however put in some effort -- something more than slapping someone else's work in a box and calling it "from the heart gift".
