Announcements Credibility and Wonderings
There was a recent post on the forums about the current owner of Second Life and an important upcoming announcement. A social media link was included. The topic went off the rails rapidly and if there was any substance to that thread I missed it.
But in the spirit of "what's going on?" it got me thinking.
So -----
there was an announcement announcing that there would be an announcement. Hmmm. The Powers That Be have been pretty quiet of late so perhaps they simply wanted to let us know they were still around. But are they?
I can remember a time (long ago) when most of us would be waiting expectantly for news. Big, better and more beautiful -- all good hopes for SL. Consequently I am wondering why I barely blinked at that forum post. Rolling back my virtual newsreel of events in mind's eye mode I discovered my pivotal point.; it was the whole Patch (and friends) sex with child avatars exposé. Most of you were around then and a search of this blog will likely find some references if you were not. There was a long and detailed with screenshots etc. "anonymous" post and some follow ups --- but it matters not. As far as I know all the documentation was taken down fairly quickly.
Honestly what was going on didn't bother me as much as how it was handled by Linden Lab. While there certainly could have been repercussions that we the populous are not privy to --- it seemed very much like a slap on the wrist and go sit in the corner for an hour "punishment". And honestly for ME a lot of credibility disappeared. Terms of Service are Terms of Service and in my mind folks in the upper echelons should not be exempt.
I am fairly distant these days and I have never been political but it does make me wonder.
