The setup was perfect. Best table in the house, a gift wrapped in careful hope, and a single red rose that promised "forever." But the clock just kept ticking, and the door never opened.
The wait started at eight, staring at an empty wine glass. By nine, the silence at the table was louder than the jazz band, filled only by nerves and chain smoked cigarettes. By ten, the night ended with three shots of cheap bourbon and a chair kicked over in blind rage. The waiter didn't even try to stop him, he just watched the back of a man who finally realized he was the punchline to a bad joke.
Sometimes love isn't in the air. It's just a stain on the tablecloth and the bill you leave behind.
